Isn't this basically the plan behind... any race building? This is a pretty solid guide on any creation, and could have been made generic quite readily.

I'll begin with some praise. I think this article provide excellent guideline for creating new races. For DMs and players looking for tips, this pretty much covers everything they need to know. So, good job on that.

However...
"...Dungeons & Dragons fourth edition gives us eight races and sixteen monster races..."

In my opinion this is already more than enough. And on top of that you've got PHB2 and MM2 (and PHB3 soon enough) giving you even more races. I find that when a PC wants to play a race that isn't already covered it's usually because they're trying to power game and not because they’re looking for some new, rich role-playing opportunity. Unless I'm creating a home-brew world that has a genuine need for a race unlike what we've already been exposed to, I'm going to STRONGLY encourage my PCs to choose from the plethora of options currently available.

Heh... I just published a new 4e race yesterday morning, too. <a href="http://abutterflydreaming.com/2009/05/20/fox-magic-kitsune/" rel="nofollow">Kitsune.</a>

Weird, how these things happen.

Great post. I specially like how you foster and encourage DMs and PCs alike to use their imagination. To think outside the box, if you pardon my cliche. For that reason this is by far my fav D&D blog. Keep the good work.

Peace.
